It is reported that compared with the 2170 battery previously used by Tesla, the 4680 battery has five times the cell capacity, which can increase the cruising range of the corresponding model by 16 percent . Tesla estimates that the 4680 battery method will cost 14 percent less than the 2170 battery implementation.
Yiwei Lithium Energy announced on November 5 that the company's subsidiary Yiwei Power intends to sign a "contract" with the Jingmen High-tech Industrial Development Zone Management Committee to invest in the construction of 20GWh large cylindrical batteries for passenger vehicles in Jingmen High-tech Zone respectively. Production line and auxiliary facilities projects, 16GWh square lithium iron phosphate battery production line and auxiliary facilities projects, the total investment in fixed assets of investment projects is about 6.2 billion yuan.
At the opening ceremony of Jingmen Power Storage Battery Industrial Park held on the same day, Liu Jincheng, chairman of Yiwei Lithium Energy, said that 4680 and 4695 large cylindrical battery production lines will be built in Jingmen Power Storage Battery Industrial Park. He mentioned that this industrial park may be the first production base in the world to mass-produce 4680 and 4695 large cylindrical batteries.
Industry insiders infer that the "construction of a 20GWh large cylindrical battery production line for passenger vehicles" mentioned in the Yiwei Lithium Energy Announcement may be the 4680 and 4695 large cylindrical battery production lines.
Soochow Securities said that large cylindrical batteries have huge advantages in terms of energy density and production cost, and are expected to become an important technical route in the future. Yiwei Lithium Energy takes the lead in the layout of large cylindrical batteries. In 2021, it has produced 4680 and 4695 finished products, and has been recognized by downstream car companies. The planned 20GWh large cylindrical battery production for passenger vehicles is expected to start mass production in 2023.
Overseas battery giants speed up 4680 mass production process
Overseas, the mass production of 4680 batteries is also gradually approaching.
The head of Panasonic's battery department recently told the media that Panasonic is preparing to mass-produce 4680 large cylindrical battery cells for Tesla. The person in charge said that the technical goals of 4680 battery product development have been basically achieved, but there are still technical barriers to mass production.
Tesla has also stepped up to pave the way for mass production of the 4680 battery.
Mayor Frank Kapiti of Markham, Ontario, Canada, said on social media recently that Tesla will build a factory in the city to produce battery manufacturing equipment and supply global super factories. Preparations for the establishment and operation of the plant have been completed.
Not long ago, foreign media also photographed two trucks loaded with battery production equipment driving into Tesla's Texas Gigafactory inventory area, marked as "positive electrode production line 1" and "negative electrode production line 1".
Foreign media speculate that these moves are signals that Tesla is accelerating the mass production of the 4680 battery.
Regarding the mass production progress of 4680 batteries, Tianfeng Securities said that after domestic manufacturers have completed the production planning of 4680 batteries, it will take about 4 to 6 months from the preliminary technical exchange, agreement signing, and equipment delivery. Due to the current boom in the industry, equipment lead times may be extended to 6 to 8 months. Therefore, it is expected that batches of production lines will be delivered between April and June next year, while the delivery of overseas 4680 batteries will be later than that of domestic manufacturers.
China Merchants Securities said that large-sized cylindrical batteries such as 4680 are expected to reduce the proportion of the casing in the unit battery capacity, the number of structural parts and welding is also significantly reduced, and the production and assembly efficiency is also higher, which will ultimately be reflected in the increase in battery weight and energy density. cost reduction.
